Half Marathon: ready or not, here it comes

I’ve been slacking on blogging, so I’m just going to pick up where I am now. Still have all of last year’s races to record, but I’ll get caught up on them eventually.

Right now, Heather and I are in St. Augustine, Florida, with the Disney Princess Half Marathon in less than four days. (Heather talked me into this one!) It got here pretty quick. January I had a crazy schedule; I lost one job, started freelancing, got another job, and now trying to maintain the freelancing as well as adjusting to the new job and a really different schedule. (Much easier commute though, so hooray.)

But I’ve been slacking on running too, and the weather has been so weird it’s been tough to run outside. In South Jersey we’ve been getting an inch of snow–not so great for running—followed by 50 or 60 degree days. Which normally is okay but immediately following snow usually means ice patches, easy to slip on.

So I’ve been sticking to a treadmill, for better or for worse. I can’t seem to run more than about 5 miles on a treadmill, though, and even that is a stretch. I learned about the Zombies Run! App through Facebook, which helps pass the time a bit. You’re being chased by zombies and there’s a great storyline that’s not exactly fun….but it is. Tells you when to run intervals. “They’re coming after you!” Longest I’ve actually run since January is about 8 miles. Going to be an interesting race, to say the least! But we’re in Disney, and there will be Princesses, so maybe some of the fairy magic will rub off?

I have upgraded my running gear with a new sports bra, some fancy new layers, and new running shoes. I did run enough to break them in, so they should be ready to go.

We’re planning on doing some training runs while we’re here, we’ll see how that goes. Tomorrow morning comes early and we’re going to try & log a 5k before a full day, so I’m off to sleep. I think we need a new rule though: no half marathons before May. Too difficult to train outside when it’s cold!

Heather says: It’s the next morning and wow, we are up at 7AM for a training run. I should have been training previous to this! Just joking- I have done some training. Not enough though. Not enough for a half marathon. Races so early in the year with such cold weather and the holiday eating are tough. Amy is totally kick ass. She has gotten us up and going. I couldn’t do it without her. She is a great motivator!!! My approach is taking it one step at a time. One run at a time. One race at a time. Step by step we make it.
